My daughter stopped smiling in the middle of her birthday party.
One second, Lily was laughing with her friends.
The next, she was staring at the little pink camera my brother had given her.
Then she looked up at me.
“Daddy…”
I crouched beside her.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
She pointed across the room.
“Uncle Ryan wants this back.”
The room seemed to go quiet.
My brother Ryan was standing beside the kitchen doorway.
He froze.
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“It’s mine.”
I frowned.
“You gave it to her.”
Ryan had arrived an hour earlier carrying the camera in a gift bag.
He had even helped Lily unwrap it.
Now he looked like he regretted ever bringing it into the house.
“I made a mistake,” he said.
Ryan walked toward us.
“Give me the camera, Lily.”

She immediately moved behind me.
“No.”
“Lily.”
I stood.
“Ryan, back up.”
He ignored me.
“Give it to me.”
“She said no.”
His eyes snapped toward mine.
“Stay out of this.”
I almost laughed.
“She’s my daughter. You’re standing in my house trying to take away the birthday present you gave her. I’m already in this.”
Ryan reached around me.
Lily pulled the camera against her chest.
“No!”
I blocked his hand.
“Back up.”
His face hardened.
“Last warning.”
Then he grabbed the front of my shirt.
Several guests gasped.
I knocked his hand away.
“Don’t touch me.”
Ryan shoved me.
I stumbled backward into the birthday table.
The cake slid sideways.
Paper cups toppled.
Someone screamed.
Lily started crying.
I pushed myself upright.
“Ryan. Stop.”
But he wasn’t looking at me anymore.
He was staring at the camera.
Then he lunged for it.
I caught him around the upper body before he could reach Lily.
We crashed into a chair.
“DADDY!”
Lily’s scream stopped both of us.
Ryan froze.
So did I.
Lily wasn’t looking at us.
She was staring at the camera screen.
A video was playing.
I slowly released Ryan.
“What is it?”
Lily turned the screen toward me.
Ryan’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“Turn that off.”
I looked at my brother.
“What did you record?”
And suddenly, he wasn’t angry anymore.
He was terrified.
I took the camera from Lily.
The video was shaky and dark.
At first, I couldn’t tell what I was looking at.
Then I recognized the room.
Ryan’s garage.
The date in the corner was from three nights earlier.
“Why is this on the camera?” I asked.
Ryan said nothing.
A second person appeared in the recording.
I couldn’t see his face clearly.
But I could hear him.
“You said your brother still has the originals.”
Ryan’s recorded voice answered.
“He does.”
I looked up.
“What originals?”
Ryan rushed toward me.
“Turn it off.”
I stepped away.
On the recording, the unknown man spoke again.
“Then get into his office.”
My stomach tightened.
Ryan answered:
“I already did.”
I stopped the video.
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
My home office had been broken into two weeks earlier.
Nothing valuable had been taken.
No laptop.
No money.
No electronics.
Only one drawer had been forced open.
Ryan had helped me replace the lock afterward.
I stared at him.
“That was you?”
He shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
“You broke into my office?”
“No.”
“I just heard you say it.”
“There’s more to it than that.”
“Then explain.”
He glanced around the room.
Everyone at the party was watching.
Ryan lowered his voice.
“Not here.”
I looked down at the camera.
“No. We’re doing this right here.”
I pressed play again.
Ryan moved toward me.
I held up my hand.
“Come any closer and we’re going to have another problem.”
He stopped.
The recording continued.
The unknown man placed a thick envelope on a workbench.
Ryan opened it.
Inside were photographs.
I recognized the first one immediately.
It was me.
The next showed my wife leaving work.
Another showed Lily getting off her school bus.
My blood went cold.
I paused the video.
“Why does that man have pictures of my family?”
Ryan looked toward the floor.
“Ryan.”
Nothing.
“LOOK AT ME.”
He finally did.
“I was trying to fix something.”
“What?”
“A mistake.”
“What mistake?”
He looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
“Something I did years ago.”
I wanted to keep watching.
Ryan clearly didn’t want me to.
That was reason enough to continue.
I pressed play.
The man in the video slid another document across the table.
Ryan picked it up.
The camera was sitting close enough to capture part of the page.
A company name.
A bank account number.
And underneath it—
my name.
I stared at the screen.
“That’s my name.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“Why is my name on his paperwork?”
He didn’t answer.
Then I remembered something.
Five years earlier, Ryan had asked me to sign documents for a small business he wanted to start.
I refused.
He was angry for weeks.
Eventually, he told me he had found another investor.
I had never thought about it again.
Until now.
The video continued.
The unknown man said:
“If your brother finds out his identity was used, you’re finished.”
My hand tightened around the camera.
I stopped breathing for a second.
Then I looked at Ryan.
“You used my identity?”
“It wasn’t supposed to go this far.”
My wife stepped closer.
“What did you do?”
Ryan shook his head.
“I can explain everything.”
“Then start.”
He looked toward the front door.
That was when I realized something else.
Ryan hadn’t intentionally given Lily this camera.
At least not this camera.
Maybe he had grabbed the wrong one.
And apparently he hadn’t checked the memory card.
Lily had spent the afternoon recording her birthday party without realizing that another video was already stored on it.
A video Ryan desperately needed back.
I scrolled through the files.
There wasn’t just one recording.
There were seven.
Ryan saw them.
His face lost what little color it had left.
“Don’t.”
I opened the second video.
This one had been recorded inside a car.
Ryan was arguing with the same man.
“You promised his family would never be involved.”
The man laughed.
“You made them involved when you used his name.”
Ryan slammed his hand against the steering wheel.
“I’ll get the documents.”
“All of them?”
“Yes.”
“And your brother?”
There was a long silence.
Then Ryan said something so quietly I almost missed it.
“He can never know.”
I stopped the recording.
The entire birthday party had gone silent.
I looked at my brother.
For years, Ryan had been the person I trusted most outside my own household.
He had a key to my house.
He picked Lily up from school sometimes.
He knew where I worked.
He knew where I kept important documents.
And now I was holding a camera containing recordings that suggested he had been hiding something connected to my identity for years.
Ryan took one step backward.
“Please.”
I had never heard my brother sound like that.
“Give me the camera.”
“No.”
“You don’t know who that man is.”
“Then tell me.”
Ryan glanced toward Lily.
“We shouldn’t do this in front of her.”
For once, I agreed.
I handed the camera to my wife.
“Take Lily upstairs.”
Ryan immediately moved.
“No!”
I stepped between them.
“Why?”
He stared at the camera in my wife’s hand.
Then he said something that changed the entire situation.
“Because that isn’t the only copy.”
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Ryan swallowed.
“The camera automatically backs everything up.”
“Where?”
He didn’t answer.
“Ryan. Where?”
He looked toward my laptop sitting on the kitchen counter.
I followed his eyes.
Then I understood.
Earlier that afternoon, Lily had asked me to connect her new camera to our home Wi-Fi.
I had done it without thinking.
My wife opened the camera settings.
A synchronization symbol was blinking.
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
Ryan stared at it.
Then he sat down slowly.
He covered his face with both hands.
I had spent the last ten minutes wondering why my brother was so desperate to get the camera back.
Now I understood.
It wasn’t because of what was still on the camera.
It was because of what had already left it.
And judging by the look on Ryan’s face—
whatever was in the remaining six videos was far worse than anything we had seen yet.
