The champagne glass shattered on the marble.
Adrian struck the flower girl before she could explain.
Six-year-old Lily covered her reddened cheek. Tears ran between her fingers as he bent toward her.
“Why did you do that?”
“Please,” she sobbed. “Look.”
She raised a smartphone.
On its screen, his bride stood beside the reception table. Celeste checked the room, removed a tiny vial and poured its contents into his champagne.

“She put something inside.”
Adrian replayed the footage.
A guest beside him gasped.
Across the ballroom, Celeste stood beneath the gold chandeliers, watching them.
Adrian approached her and held out the phone.
“Tell me that’s not you.”
“I can explain.”
He lowered it, gripped her jaw and forced her to meet his eyes.
“You wanted me dead?”
The reception manager intervened immediately.
“Let go of her.”
Adrian released her.
Behind him, Lily was still crying.
Her mother, Emma, reached her, lifted her into her arms and stepped away from the crowd.
“Don’t come near us,” she told him.
The manager called the hotel’s medical team and police. Staff secured the broken glass and remaining drink, keeping guests away while investigators arranged their examination.
Nobody could identify what had been added just by watching the video.
Adrian had not swallowed it.
Lily’s quick action had prevented that.
But nothing she had done made his slap acceptable.
Emma took her daughter into a quiet room for medical assessment while a staff member stayed nearby.
Adrian started after them.
The manager stopped him.
“Give them space.”
He remained in the ballroom, staring at the phone Emma had left with the manager for preservation.
Celeste watched it too.
Then the manager noticed the recording continued beyond the moment she poured.
He played the next seconds.
Celeste slipped the vial into her purse.
A man entered the edge of the frame.
He adjusted the place card beside Adrian’s glass, leaned close and spoke.
“Not yet. After the announcement.”
Adrian recognized his voice before his face appeared.
His older brother, Julian.
Julian had arranged the reception’s business announcement.
That morning, Adrian had refused to sign papers giving him control of a troubled family investment company.
Now Julian stood beside the ballroom exit, speaking urgently into his phone.
The manager informed the arriving security team.
They asked him to remain available.
Julian looked toward Adrian.
“What has she told you?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
He had spent years trusting Julian to explain transactions he didn’t understand.
For once, he waited for someone else to ask the questions.
Lily’s recording had begun with the flowers.
Emma had given her the phone so she could show her grandmother the decorations later. Lily wandered toward the reception table, filming place cards and little gold ribbons.
She didn’t understand Julian’s words.
She understood that something unfamiliar had gone into a drink.
When she saw Adrian lifting the glass, she knocked it away.
After her examination, she asked Emma whether she had ruined the wedding.
“No,” Emma said. “You tried to help. He hurt you. That was his fault.”
Adrian heard those words from the corridor.
He sat down without knocking.
Investigators interviewed Celeste and Julian separately.
Celeste said Julian supplied the vial.
He had told her its contents would make Adrian briefly unwell, allowing the business announcement to proceed without his objections.
She also said he threatened to reveal that she had secretly received money from him.
The payments were real.
Their explanation required more than her account.
Investigators preserved her communications and compared them with Julian’s.
Messages showed him coaching her to persuade Adrian to sign the company papers. When persuasion failed, he discussed another way to ensure Adrian would not interrupt the announcement.
Celeste had agreed to add the substance.
Her fear of exposure did not remove that choice.
Julian denied knowing what was in the vial.
Then investigators found his instructions about collecting it, concealing it and waiting until after the announcement.
Laboratory examination identified a substance that did not belong in the drink and could have caused serious harm.
The plan was not made safe by calling the illness temporary.
The business documents explained why timing mattered.
Julian had circulated an announcement claiming Adrian approved a financial restructuring. A signature page bore Adrian’s name, although he had refused to sign.
Julian expected the guests to hear the announcement while Adrian was still standing beside his bride.
If Adrian became unwell afterward, Julian could present himself as the person authorized to manage the resulting disruption.
It would not make the forged approval valid.
It would create confusion and buy time before anyone challenged it.
The surviving video challenged everything sooner.
Adrian instructed independent counsel to halt the transaction and preserve the company records.
Police investigated the drink separately.
The reception ended without speeches or a final dance.
Later that night, Emma allowed Adrian to speak to Lily from the doorway.
He did not approach her chair.
“I hit you,” he said. “It was wrong.”
Lily pressed closer to her mother.
“I thought you’d listen.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I should have.”
He didn’t say he was angry because of the spilled glass.
He didn’t ask her to forgive him because she had saved him.
When she turned away, he left.
The consequences unfolded over the following months.
Celeste and Julian faced investigation for their actions and the financial documents. Adrian began the process of ending the marriage and reviewing his brother’s access to the business.
Emma decided whether contact with Lily would resume, guided by her daughter’s needs.
Adrian accepted those boundaries and sought help for his own behavior.
He sent a brief letter.
It contained an apology without gifts, excuses or a request for an answer.
Emma kept it until Lily wanted to read it.
Months later, Lily attended another family celebration.
She stayed beside her mother and filmed the cake for her grandmother.
Someone dropped a plate nearby.
Lily flinched.
Emma took her hand.
Across the room, Adrian saw them.
He stayed where he was, giving them space.
The broken plate was cleared away.
The music continued.
And Lily kept recording because she wanted to remember the party.
