Behind him, Staff Sergeant Brooks drank from a plastic water bottle, then deliberately splashed some onto the concrete.
“You look tired, Specialist.”
I swallowed my anger.
“First Sergeant, I completed every required check.”
“Then why are you still on the floor?”
I got back to my feet.
“My work is finished. The records are accurate.”
A young mechanic whispered, “She wouldn’t falsify the report.”
Through the glass office above us, General Harrison had been watching.
“How long has this been happening?”
He lowered his binoculars.
“Get me the inspection log.”
“The one Carter signed?”
“Especially that one.”
Voss turned toward the observation window. His expression changed immediately.
He thought the inspection concerned a missing maintenance tool.
But the signed log established who had last controlled the equipment before it disappeared.
And the soldier Voss wanted to blame had already been removed from duty.
