I HID UNDER THE GUEST-ROOM BED BECAUSE I SUSPECTED MY HUSBAND WAS LYING—BUT WHEN I HEARD HIM TELL ANOTHER WOMAN HE WOULD LEAVE ME “AFTER OUR ANNIVERSARY,” I CRAWLED OUT AND WATCHED HIS FACE CHANGE-AREUM-VIDEO

I never imagined I would hide under a bed in my own house.

But by then, I had stopped trusting my husband’s explanations.

For weeks, Daniel had been acting differently. His phone was suddenly always face down. He stepped outside to answer certain calls. And whenever I walked into a room unexpectedly, conversations seemed to end.

Every time I asked what was wrong, he gave me the same answer.

“Nothing.”

So one afternoon, when he told me he would be alone at home while I was out, I made a decision I still couldn’t believe I was making.

I pretended to leave.

Then I quietly returned through the side entrance and went into the guest room.

I knew he had been spending strange amounts of time there lately.

I looked around but found nothing obvious.

Then I heard the front door.

My heart started racing.

I had nowhere to go without being seen.

So I dropped to the floor and slid beneath the guest-room bed.

For several minutes, I heard only footsteps.

Then another voice.

A woman.

My entire body went cold.

She entered the room with Daniel.

I could see their shoes from beneath the bed.

Her heels stopped only a few feet from my face.

Then she asked the question I had been terrified of hearing.

“Your wife really won’t be home?”

Daniel answered immediately.

“She won’t.”

No hesitation.

No confusion.

He had expected her.

I covered my mouth with one hand because I was suddenly afraid they would hear me breathing.

The woman laughed softly.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

I wanted to crawl out right then.

I wanted to stand up and demand to know who she was.

But something stopped me.

Maybe instinct.

Maybe fear.

Maybe I knew that if I revealed myself too quickly, Daniel would immediately start explaining.

And for once, I wanted to hear what he said when he believed I wasn’t listening.

The woman sat down.

The mattress shifted slightly above me.

My stomach twisted.

They spoke quietly for a moment.

Then she asked:

“When are you leaving Natalie?”

Every part of me froze.

There are questions that hurt.

And then there are questions that tell you an entire conversation has happened many times before.

She wasn’t asking whether Daniel planned to leave me.

She was asking when.

Which meant he had already promised her he would.

Daniel remained quiet for a few seconds.

I stared at the floor beneath me, waiting.

Then he answered.

“After our anniversary.”

I felt like someone had punched the air out of my lungs.

Our anniversary.

The dinner I had already been planning.

The date Daniel had told me he wanted us to make special this year.

The weekend he said would give us a chance to reconnect.

Apparently, while I was planning how to celebrate our marriage, he was planning when to end it.

The woman sounded annoyed.

“Why wait?”

Daniel sighed.

“Because if I do it before, she’ll know something has been going on.”

I closed my eyes.

So that was the plan.

Smile through our anniversary.

Accept whatever gift I gave him.

Maybe toast to another year together.

Then leave me afterward.

And apparently he believed waiting a few extra days would somehow hide what he had been doing.

The woman asked another question.

“Does she suspect us?”

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Natalie suspects everything lately.”

That sentence hurt almost as much as the rest.

Because I remembered every time I had questioned him.

Every time he had made me feel paranoid.

Every time he said I was imagining things.

I wasn’t imagining anything.

He knew I was getting close to the truth.

The woman said:

“You told me you were going to handle this.”

“I am.”

“When?”

“I just told you.”

“After the anniversary?”

“Yes.”

I couldn’t stay under the bed anymore.

Not for another second.

I slid forward.

At first, they didn’t notice.

Then my hand appeared from beneath the bed.

The woman gasped.

Daniel jumped to his feet.

I crawled out slowly and stood.

Nobody spoke.

His face was unforgettable.

All the confidence disappeared.

“Natalie?”

I brushed dust from my clothes.

“Yes.”

The woman stood immediately.

Daniel looked between us.

“What are you doing here?”

I almost laughed.

“In my house?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“I know exactly what you meant.”

The woman looked horrified.

“Daniel, you said she was gone.”

I looked at her.

“And apparently he told you a lot of things.”

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Natalie, listen—”

“No.”

He stopped.

I had listened enough.

I looked at the woman.

“How long?”

She glanced at Daniel.

I noticed.

“Don’t look at him. I’m asking you.”

She swallowed.

“A few months.”

A few months.

I nodded slowly.

Daniel started talking.

“It isn’t what you think.”

I stared at him.

“I was underneath the bed.”

He went silent.

“I heard you tell her you were leaving me after our anniversary.”

He looked down.

I could feel tears coming, but my anger was stronger.

“Were you going to sit across from me at dinner and pretend?”

“Natalie…”

“Were you going to let me celebrate our marriage while you already had an exit date?”

He had no answer.

The woman grabbed her bag.

“I didn’t know she had no idea.”

I looked at her.

“What did he tell you?”

Daniel interrupted.

“Don’t do this.”

She turned toward him.

“You told me your marriage was already over.”

There it was.

Another lie.

I looked at Daniel.

“Really?”

He ran both hands through his hair.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

He said nothing.

I pointed toward the bed.

“After our anniversary?”

His face tightened.

That was enough.

The woman headed toward the door.

Before leaving, she looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

Then she looked at Daniel.

“And don’t call me.”

The door closed behind her.

Daniel and I were alone.

He tried to speak.

I raised my hand.

“No more explanations today.”

“Natalie, please.”

I looked around the guest room.

The room where I had hidden because I was desperate to know whether my husband was lying.

I had gotten my answer.

Just not the one I wanted.

I walked toward the door.

Daniel followed.

“What happens now?”

I stopped and looked at him.

“You already decided what happens now.”

He looked confused.

“You were going to leave me.”

“Natalie—”

“After our anniversary.”

He lowered his eyes.

I shook my head.

“The only difference is that I found out before you got to pretend one more time.”

Then I walked away.

I had hidden under that bed hoping to prove my suspicions wrong.

Instead, I heard my husband schedule the end of our marriage like it was another appointment on his calendar.

And when I finally crawled out, the shocked look on his face told me something his lies never could.

He had planned everything.

He just never planned for me to hear it.
