MY FATHER-IN-LAW LET GO OF THE ROPE WHILE MY DAUGHTER WAS HANGING ABOVE A ROARING FIRE—THEN WE SAW THE SECURITY CAMERA_ngoctuyet_video

I heard my little girl screaming before I even reached the backyard.

“MOMMY!”

I dropped everything and ran.

“EMILY?!”

Another scream.

Then my husband’s voice exploded from outside.

“DAD! PUT HER DOWN!”

I threw open the back door—

and froze.

There was a roaring fire in the middle of the backyard.

My seven-year-old daughter was suspended above it.

And my father-in-law, Richard, was gripping the rope.

“GET HER AWAY FROM THAT FIRE!”

Richard looked at me.

His face was twisted with anger.

“She needs to learn!”

“LEARN WHAT?!”

“She destroyed my property!”

I stared at him.

“She is SEVEN!”

Emily was crying.

“Mommy, please!”

I rushed forward.

Richard tightened his grip.

“STAY BACK!”

My husband, Michael, stepped between us.

“Dad.”

His voice was shaking.

“Lower her down.”

“No.”

“LOWER MY DAUGHTER DOWN!”

“She broke something that belonged to me.”

Michael stared at his father in disbelief.

“You’re doing this over PROPERTY?”

“She needs consequences.”

“THIS ISN’T A CONSEQUENCE!”

Michael charged toward the rope.

Richard stepped backward.

“Don’t touch it!”

“Give me the rope!”

“BACK OFF!”

Then—

CLANK!

Everyone froze.

The pulley above us shifted.

Richard looked up.

The rope suddenly slid several inches through his hands.

Emily dropped.

“MOMMY!”

“EMILY!”

I ran underneath her.

Richard desperately grabbed the rope again.

Michael seized his father’s arm.

“HOLD IT!”

“I’M TRYING!”

“THEN PULL HER UP!”

“I CAN’T!”

Emily was crying hysterically.

“Daddy!”

Michael looked up at his daughter.

“I’m here, sweetheart!”

He grabbed the rope beside his father.

“Help me!”

Richard pulled.

Nothing happened.

“WHY ISN’T IT MOVING?!”

“The pulley is stuck!”

“Then cut her down!”

“With what?!”

I looked around desperately.

The flames crackled only feet away.

“Emily, look at Mommy!”

She looked down at me.

“I’m scared!”

“I know, baby.”

I positioned myself underneath her.

“Don’t look at the fire. Look at me.”

Richard suddenly yelled.

“The rope is slipping!”

Michael tightened both hands around it.

“THEN HOLD IT!”

“I CAN’T!”

“Yes, you CAN!”

Another violent jerk.

CLANK!

Emily dropped again.

I screamed.

“MICHAEL!”

“DAD, DON’T LET GO!”

Richard’s hands were sliding.

“I CAN’T HOLD HER!”

Michael lunged for the rope.

But before he could grab it—

Richard lost his grip.

His hands opened.

The rope shot upward.

And Emily fell.

“NO!”

Everything happened at once.

I threw myself forward.

Emily dropped toward me.

I caught her around the waist—

and the force sent both of us crashing onto the ground beside the fire.

“EMILY!”

Michael rushed forward.

“MOVE! MOVE!”

He grabbed us and pulled us away from the flames.

I wrapped both arms around my daughter.

She buried her face against me.

“Mommy…”

“I’ve got you.”

I held her tighter.

“You’re with me.”

Michael dropped beside us.

“Emily, look at Daddy.”

She looked at him.

His face crumpled.

“I’m sorry.”

Then I looked toward Richard.

He hadn’t moved.

He was standing beside the empty rope.

Staring at us.

I slowly stood.

“YOU COULD HAVE KILLED HER!”

Richard swallowed.

“I didn’t mean for the rope to slip.”

“You shouldn’t have put her there in the first place!”

“She destroyed something valuable!”

Michael turned around.

“What did she destroy?”

Richard didn’t answer.

“Dad.”

Silence.

“WHAT DID SHE BREAK?”

Richard finally pointed toward his workshop.

“My father’s watch.”

Michael stared at him.

“A watch?”

“It was irreplaceable.”

“So you did THAT to my daughter?”

“You don’t understand what that watch meant to me.”

Michael stepped toward him.

“No.”

His voice suddenly became quiet.

“You don’t understand what SHE means to me.”

Richard backed away.

“Michael—”

“Stay away from my family.”

“She’s my granddaughter.”

“Not after tonight.”

Richard’s face changed.

“You can’t keep her away from me.”

“Watch me.”

I was still holding Emily when suddenly—

BEEP.

Everyone stopped.

Michael slowly turned his head.

“What was that?”

Another sound.

BEEP.

I followed his eyes toward the house.

Mounted directly above the back door was our security camera.

A tiny red light was blinking.

Recording.

Michael stared at it.

Then at his father.

“It recorded everything.”

Richard’s face went pale.

He immediately walked toward the house.

Michael blocked him.

“Where are you going?”

“Move.”

“No.”

“I said MOVE.”

Richard tried stepping around him.

Michael blocked him again.

“You’re not touching that camera.”

“That’s my property.”

“The camera belongs to us.”

Richard looked toward it.

“Turn it off.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because this is a family matter.”

“A family matter?”

I looked down at Emily.

“You hung my daughter above a fire.”

Richard lowered his voice.

“You’re exaggerating what happened.”

Michael almost laughed.

“Exaggerating?”

“It was under control.”

“WE WATCHED YOU DROP HER!”

“The pulley malfunctioned!”

“Because you put her there!”

Richard’s eyes kept moving toward the camera.

And suddenly I noticed something.

He wasn’t looking angry anymore.

He looked terrified.

“Michael…”

I tightened my arms around Emily.

“Get the recording.”

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“No.”

Michael stopped.

Richard repeated himself.

“No one touches that footage.”

The backyard went silent.

I stared at him.

“Why?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Michael slowly walked toward the house.

His father followed.

“Michael.”

Michael kept walking.

“Michael, STOP.”

He reached the security panel beside the door.

Richard grabbed his shoulder.

“Don’t open it.”

Michael turned.

“Get your hand off me.”

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

Richard said nothing.

Michael pulled his shoulder free and opened the security app.

I watched his expression change.

“What?”

He didn’t answer.

“Michael, what is it?”

He stared at the screen.

Then he looked at his father.

“This camera has recordings from yesterday.”

Richard froze.

My stomach dropped.

“Yesterday?”

Michael began scrolling.

More files appeared.

Monday.

Tuesday.

Wednesday.

Thursday.

Almost every afternoon that week.

All during the hours when Richard had been watching Emily while Michael and I were working.

I felt cold.

“Why are there so many recordings?”

Richard suddenly lunged toward the phone.

“GIVE ME THAT!”

Michael jerked it away.

“DON’T TOUCH ME!”

“Delete them!”

“Why?”

“DELETE THEM!”

Emily suddenly tightened her arms around my neck.

I looked down.

Her face had changed.

“Emily?”

She whispered something.

“What, sweetheart?”

Her eyes remained fixed on her grandfather.

“Grandpa doesn’t want you to watch Tuesday.”

Nobody moved.

Michael slowly looked at our daughter.

“Why Tuesday?”

Richard immediately spoke.

“She’s confused.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

“Emily—”

“Don’t talk to her!”

I pulled my daughter closer.

Michael looked down at his phone.

His thumb hovered over the recording marked:

TUESDAY — 4:17 PM

Richard’s face had gone completely white.

“Son…”

Michael looked at him.

“What happened Tuesday?”

Richard said nothing.

Michael pressed PLAY.

The video began.

For several seconds, we only saw the empty backyard.

Then Emily appeared on screen.

And someone followed her outside.

I looked at Richard.

He took one slow step backward.

Then another.

“Michael…”

My husband stared at the screen.

“What the hell am I watching?”

Richard turned toward the gate.

Michael immediately looked up.

“DAD!”

Richard stopped.

“Where are you going?”

No answer.

Michael held up the phone.

“You were so terrified about tonight’s recording…”

He looked back at the footage.

“…because tonight isn’t what you were trying to hide.”

Richard said nothing.

And as the Tuesday recording continued playing—

I realized the fire wasn’t the beginning of what had happened to my daughter.

It was simply the first time we had been there to see it.
