I heard my eight-year-old daughter screaming upstairs.
“DAD! DON’T LET HER TAKE IT!”
I dropped what I was carrying and ran.
“Lily?”
Another scream came from her bedroom.
I rushed through the doorway.
And stopped.
My sister Vanessa was standing beside Lily’s desk.
She had my daughter’s phone in one hand.
And a hammer in the other.
“Put it down.”
Vanessa spun toward me.
Her face changed immediately.
“You weren’t supposed to be home.”
That sentence told me something was very wrong.
“What are you doing with her phone?”
Lily was backed against her bed.
She pointed at Vanessa.
“She’s trying to break it!”
I looked at my sister.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Vanessa.”
“Stay out of this.”
“She’s my daughter. There is no ‘staying out of this.’”
Vanessa looked at the phone.

Then she raised the hammer.
I moved instantly.
I grabbed her wrist.
“DROP IT!”
Vanessa shoved me backward.
I slammed into Lily’s bookshelf.
Books crashed onto the floor.
“DAD!”
“I’m okay.”
Vanessa suddenly ran.
She bolted into the hallway with Lily’s phone still in her hand.
I went after her.
“Vanessa!”
She reached the stairs.
“Give me Lily’s phone!”
She threw the hammer onto the carpet and grabbed the front of my shirt.
“Leave it alone.”
“What is on that phone?”
“Nothing you need to see.”
She shoved me into the wall.
I caught myself before losing my balance.
Vanessa tried to run again.
This time, I grabbed the phone.
She held on.
“LET GO!”
“No!”
We pulled in opposite directions.
Then the phone slipped from both our hands.
It hit the carpet and skidded several feet down the hallway.
Vanessa lunged toward it.
I stepped in front of her.
She collided shoulder-first with me.
We stumbled into a small hallway table.
The lamp fell to the floor.
“STOP!”
Lily’s voice cut through everything.
Vanessa and I froze.
My daughter stood in her bedroom doorway.
She was crying.
But she wasn’t looking at Vanessa.
She was staring at her phone.
“Daddy…”
I immediately went to her.
“What is it?”
“Don’t let her delete it.”
I picked up the phone.
“Delete what?”
Vanessa went pale.
“Lily, don’t.”
I looked at my daughter.
“What’s on here?”
Lily hesitated.
“Videos.”
“What videos?”
Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“The ones I record when Aunt Vanessa comes into my room at night.”
I slowly turned toward my sister.
“What?”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That is enough.”
I immediately moved between her and Lily.
“No. Stay there.”
“Daniel, you don’t understand.”
“Then start explaining.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Before I could ask another question, footsteps came from the stairs.
My twelve-year-old son Noah appeared.
He was holding his tablet.
“Dad…”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“I copied the videos.”
Vanessa froze.
“Noah.”
My son didn’t move.
“I knew someone was trying to delete them.”
“You had no right—”
“He had every right,” I said.
Vanessa stared at me.
Noah opened a folder on his tablet.
There were dozens of video files.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“How many are there?”
“Twenty-seven.”
I stared at him.
“How long has this been happening?”
“About three weeks.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t understand what you’re looking at.”
“Then explain it.”
“I can’t.”
“Can’t—or won’t?”
No answer.
I turned back to Noah.
“Play the first one.”
“Daniel,” Vanessa said.
“Play it.”
Noah tapped the screen.
The video began.
The image was dark and grainy.
Lily’s phone had apparently been positioned somewhere near her bed.
A timestamp appeared in the corner.
2:13 A.M.
The bedroom door slowly opened.
Vanessa entered.
She looked around the room.
Then she walked toward Lily’s desk.
I glanced at my sister.
“What were you looking for?”
She didn’t answer.
On the recording, Vanessa opened one drawer.
Then another.
She checked beneath some books.
Then the bedroom door opened again.
Another person walked inside.
My wife.
I stopped breathing.
“What the hell?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
On the video, my wife whispered:
“Did you find it?”
“No.”
“Check the desk again.”
Vanessa searched another drawer.
Then my wife’s recorded voice came clearly through the tablet.
“Find the phone before Daniel sees what’s on it.”
Nobody in the hallway moved.
I stared at the screen.
Then at Vanessa.
“What is my wife trying to hide?”
She looked away.
“Ask her.”
“You’ve been helping her.”
“It isn’t that simple.”
“You’ve been sneaking into my daughter’s bedroom in the middle of the night.”
“I was trying to fix this.”
“Fix what?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Noah suddenly spoke.
“Dad.”
I looked at him.
“There are more videos.”
“How many?”
“A lot.”
“Show me.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“No.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because once you see them, you can’t pretend everything is normal anymore.”
“Everything stopped being normal when I found you standing over my daughter’s phone with a hammer.”
Noah opened another clip.
3:06 A.M.
Vanessa entered Lily’s room again.
This time, she wasn’t searching the desk.
She was holding an envelope.
She slid it underneath Lily’s mattress.
Then my wife appeared in the doorway.
“You were supposed to destroy that.”
“I couldn’t.”
“Vanessa.”
“What if Daniel finds out?”
“He won’t.”
The video ended.
I looked at my sister.
“What was in the envelope?”
She didn’t answer.
I went into Lily’s bedroom.
“Dad?”
I lifted the mattress.
Nothing.
I checked underneath the bed.
Nothing.
Then Lily spoke.
“Mom took it.”
I turned around.
“When?”
“Two days ago.”
“How do you know?”
“I saw her.”
“What was inside?”
“I don’t know.”
Vanessa suddenly spoke from the hallway.
“I do.”
I looked at her.
“Then tell me.”
She swallowed.
“Photos.”
“Photos of what?”
“Not what.”
Her voice dropped.
“Who.”
I felt my stomach twist.
“Who was in them?”
Vanessa looked toward Lily and Noah.
“Daniel, we shouldn’t do this in front of the kids.”
I stepped closer.
“Who?”
She hesitated.
Then Noah interrupted.
“I know.”
Everyone turned toward him.
Vanessa stared at my son.
“No, you don’t.”
“Yes, I do.”
“How?”
“Because I copied Mom’s cloud folder too.”
My mouth went dry.
“You did what?”
Noah tapped the tablet.
“I found the same pictures.”
He opened another folder.
Dozens of images appeared.
I recognized our house.
Our driveway.
Lily’s school.
Noah’s soccer field.
Then I saw myself.
Photos of me leaving work.
Photos of me buying groceries.
Photos of me sitting inside my car.
Someone had been photographing me.
For weeks.
Maybe longer.
“What is this?”
Noah scrolled.
Then he stopped.
One photograph showed my wife standing beside a man I didn’t recognize.
They were talking beside a black SUV.
Another showed Vanessa with them.
I looked at my sister.
“Who is he?”
She said nothing.
“Vanessa.”
“You need to ask your wife.”
“Stop saying that!”
Lily flinched.
I immediately lowered my voice.
“Sorry, sweetheart.”
Then I looked back at Vanessa.
“Tell me who that man is.”
She stared at the tablet.
“He’s the reason your wife wanted Lily’s phone destroyed.”
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Lily suddenly spoke.
“I’ve seen him.”
I turned toward her.
“What?”
“The man in the picture.”
“Where?”
She pointed toward her bedroom.
“He came in here.”
Every hair on my arms stood up.
“When?”
“At night.”
Vanessa’s face went completely white.
“Lily…”
My daughter looked at me.
“I thought he was Mom’s friend.”
I crouched beside her.
“What did he do?”
“He talked to Mom.”
“About what?”
“I couldn’t hear everything.”
She thought for a moment.
“But Mom told him you couldn’t find out.”
I looked toward Vanessa.
Her eyes were filled with fear now.
Not anger.
Fear.
Then Noah scrolled farther through the folder.
“Dad.”
“What?”
“I found something else.”
He turned the tablet toward me.
It was a photograph of an official-looking document lying on a table.
The image wasn’t clear enough to read everything.
But I could see my name.
My wife’s name.
And a date.
Tomorrow.
“What is that?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Oh God.”
I looked at her.
“You know what this is?”
Before she could answer, we heard something downstairs.
A key entering the front door.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Lily grabbed my arm.
“Daddy…”
The lock turned.
Then my wife’s voice echoed through the house.
“Daniel?”
Nobody answered.
Footsteps entered the foyer.
“Why are you home?”
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at Noah’s tablet.
Then at Lily’s phone in my hand.
My wife started walking upstairs.
One step.
Then another.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“Before she gets up here, you need to understand something.”
I pulled my arm free.
“What?”
She glanced toward the staircase.
“I wasn’t trying to destroy Lily’s phone because I wanted to protect your wife.”
My wife’s footsteps were getting closer.
I stared at Vanessa.
“Then who were you protecting?”
She looked directly at Lily.
“My niece.”
I froze.
Then my wife reached the top of the stairs.
She saw all four of us standing there.
She saw Lily’s phone in my hand.
She saw Noah’s tablet.
And finally—
she saw Vanessa.
The color drained from her face.
“What did you tell him?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
My wife stepped closer.
“What did you tell him?”
I held up Lily’s phone.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“You’re going to tell me.”
My wife went completely still.
I pointed toward Noah’s tablet.
“Who is the man in those pictures?”
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then Lily whispered beside me:
“Mom…”
My wife looked at our daughter.
And Lily asked the one question that made everyone in that hallway freeze.
“Is that the man you said was my real dad?”
